The Setting _________________ ![]() 17th century Viet-Nam, an empire called Dai-Viet, is on the brink of civil war as two families—one from the North and the other from the South—vie for the control of the country. National stability is at stake with a weakened Emperor and rampant corruption within the Confucian administration. The internal crisis is intensified by armed clashes at the borders with Champa, an Indianised nation, and by the massive arrival of Westerners. While French Jesuits set foot on the territory with hopes of evangelising the population, Portuguese and Dutch merchants aim to profit from the natural riches of the area. Maritime trade is about to rule this part of the world as ships roam the Eastern seas, their bellies loaded with silk, spices, precious woods and gems. These
times of social unrest and political upheaval provide the ideal setting
for the adventures of Mandarin Tan, a young magistrate
in charge of meting out justice in a world swept by the winds of change
and undermined by an ambitious ruling class. |

The Characters ____________ Mandarin Tan, the son of a peasant, who has succeeded in the national exams to become a high-ranking officer in charge of a small northern province. Bred in pure Confucian tradition, he is loyal to the Emperor and abides by laws meant to enforce the stability of society. However, in an empire ever more corrupt, where powerful nobles prey upon peasants, Mandarin Tan comes to grips with the contradictions between his origins and his political function. At the same time, the arrival of Westerners wielding a new religion jeopardises the equilibrium between Confucianism, Buddhism and Taoism, thus inciting the magistrate to reconsider the traditional patterns that are on the verge of crumbling. With time, the young and adamant mandarin loses his certainties, finally coming to terms with doubt and skepticism. Scholar Dinh, his friend, whose attraction to splendid fabrics and fancy jewelry is topped only by his love of gossip and poetry. Dinh is highly intelligent and intuitive. His perspective, untainted by superstition or Confucian indoctrination, serves as a precious counterpoint to Mandarin Tan’s deductions. Doctor Pork is obese, clever, and greedy. A brilliant mind lies behind his surprisingly handsome face, bad breath, and enormous belly. Though he is easily distracted by a whiff of food or the glimmer of gold, Doctor Pork's vast erudition makes him essential in cases of violent death—a regular feature of the Mandarin Tan mysteries. Minh & Xuan, Mandarin Tan’s litter bearers, are often found in seedy teahouses, in company of easygoing women. They enjoy devising salacious charades, telling ghost-stories and counting their alleged female conquests. |

L'Ombre du prince, Editions Philippe
Picquier, 2000 The Prince's Shadow Mandarin Tan and his friend Scholar Dinh travel to Thang Long, the empire’s capital, in search of books for their province. But instead of literary works they stumble on a string of delicately mutilated bodies, presenting no apparent logical link. These murders, taunting the authorities, cannot remain unpunished at a time when peasant insurrection threatens to overthrow the local prince. What message is the murderer trying to get through in the midst of political turbulence and social disruption? Meanwhile, totally unmindful of the investigation, Doctor Pork wreaks havoc at the ongoing medical congress, causing Taoist acupuncture masters to come to blows with traditional herbalists. Things get slightly out of hand as a famished leper ransacks a restaurant and an old eunuch is shamelessly robbed of his dignity. For Mandarin Tan, this trip to the capital turns out to be a trip down memory lane as ghosts from his past come back to greet him, reviving scenes meant for oblivion. Elephants, tigers, a hunting party in the jungle: the fierceness of human nature finds its full-blown expression in the land of dark mountain people. |

How will the arrival of European Jesuits and Portuguese merchants affect the destiny of the empire? While the country stands on the threshold of profound mutations, the inexplicable murder of a libidinous count serves as a reminder of the deep Taoist currents flowing through ancient traditions. Not surprisingly the young magistrate falls under the spell of two women wielding with equal maestria magic elixirs and cracking whips, and is therefore compelled to recover all his wits in order to solve these enigmas. ![]() Kindle edition (approx 374 pages)

Les Travers du docteur Porc, Editions Philippe
Picquier, 2007 Doctor Pork hogs the limelight When Doctor Pork accepts to take charge
of the court of justice in Mandarin Tan's absence, little does
he know that it is a pig in a poke. After several days
of living high off the hog, the portly doctor is suddenly
confronted with a mysterious death that compels him to stick his nose
into an old case. But things are not as easy as they seem, thus
requiring him to trot from one autopsy to another, in a town where
lecherous old swine rub shoulders with pretty young things. Pressed for
time to wrap up the investigation, lest he get the chop upon Mandarin
Tan's return, Doctor Pork vows to sniff out the culprits by fair means
or foul.
Fortunately,
he is a man of many talents: not only is he a cutting-edge plastic
surgeon and a sharp acupuncturist, but he also proves to be a
keen interrogator who does not shrink from grilling
uncooperative suspects. Not surprisingly, under Doctor Pork's
examination felons tend to squeal like a stuck pig before spilling the
beans.
